Strange Fortune description

The band lineup shifts and Sol Invictus strip away layers to return to a rough and raw, almost dark-rock flavor of folk noir. This dynamic release should catch the attention of even the most old school Sol fans.

The Devil's Steed press release

The first post-World Serpent release from Sol Invictus is a nod back in the direction to a more earthy folk sound.

On this release, Tony Wakeford (guitar, voice, keyboards) is supported by Eric Roger (aka SEVEN PINES ; trumpet, recorder, vocals), Gary Parsons (guitar, percussion, vocals), Karl Blake (aka SHOCKHEADED PETERS ; bass), Maria Vellanz (violin), Renée Rosen (violin).

The title track is a song about suicide. In Russian folklore, suicides become "steeds for the devil."

As well as the usual happy Tony Wakeford songs, there are two traditional songs getting the Sol Invictus treatment, "Twa Corbies" and "Three Knights Came from the West". Philip Larkin's poem "The North Ship" also becomes the basis for one song. Artwork is by Tor Lundvall.

the first edition comes as limited 6 page digipack.

Worth every single penny. This album sounds much like older Sol Invictus, very smooth and light sounding. The lyrics are of fabulous quality and go well with the music. Long time Sol Invicuts fans will not be dissapointed.

While this offering is certainly a return of sorts to an earlier manifestation of the Sol Invictus sound (e.g., "Dark Folk"), to me at least it lacks some of the dread-inducing punch and overwhelming sadness of his finest earlier albums (such as TREES IN WINTER and LET US PREY). Nevertheless, most followers should be very satisfied. The sound is extremely bright, even excessively so at times (there is even some high-end distortion that creeps into the 12-string guitar sound on a few tracks). Overall, a fine, if a bit tired, collection of songs.
